The Head Guide Study by Jotaku The Head Guide Study by Jotaku
Edit: I would like to say that I am in no way perfect, that I still make mistakes, and am still growing!
With a lot of manga/anime you see the mouth halfway between the nose and chin. Now, this is sort of true, but sorta not; it's actually halfway between the nosetip and chin. The more common measurement (and kinda easier) is that the mouth is 1/3rd of the way down between the bottom of the nose and chin.

Too lazy to edit the image. >w<

I was drawing with a friend on openCanvas, trying to give tips and techniques onto the measurements on heads and how things relate to each other and stuff like that.
As I was doing it, I found myself figuring out some interesting things myself.
I decided to do a head study/tutorial to try and help people draw heads better.

Please note that I am entirely unprofessional and these are just things I have learned through years of drawing, tips from others, and art classes. My techniques and such may not be entirely correct, but they are things I have noticed and am pointing out.

If you have any questions or can't read my handwriting, let me know and I will try to answer and explain anything you need.

I hope this is a little helpful.

This is truly cool!

Thank you for sharing. I'm trying to learn how to draw anime-ish style for a future project, but I realize I need to learn an aweful lot still. These things really help a lot. :)

I can see this as an anime stand of view since your main way of drawing is based solely on anime.
For you, you will always be stuck in one way of drawing since most of your techniques all relate to only one style of face.
There is still alot of stuff you have left out, but you are not going for realism just a general face.
Most true anime artists (saying this as from artists from japan) actually have learned anatomy first and learned how to change the proportion on different parts of the human body.
American anime isn't always true to this most just learn the style without learning the background or anatomy.
Read up on our favorite anime artist and you will see what styles actually drive them to create what they do.

I am currently in a Figure Drawing class and have been told that I have a very classical realism style! Anime style is only my preferred way of drawing, not my only way. And while my little study may not be 100% correct, I do know at least a couple of them apply to real people and many different styles. ;w;

i hate drawing noses when the face is facing forward... i have always found drawing easier when the face is facing sidways for some reason, even though i draw most of my faces facing forward....

Well, I did say 'unprofessional' for a reason, ne? And anime/manga style isn't general listed under 'realistic' art styles, anyway.
I do think, though, the mouth being to wide or not is a matter of opinion. ;w;

I realized that too. Just a little bit shorter, I guess it's not too bad though. Doesn't the ends of the mouth align with centered pupils?
